You’re whitewashing ‘the latter’. They’re not disinterestedly worried about the institution of marriage.

Not wanting gays to have the same rights as straight people is homophobia. You can say it’s excusable homophobia, from people from some backgrounds. Doesn’t mean it’s not homophobia.

And given the Uganda thing, this is no time to talk about the killing of homosexuals.

The matter of marriage is not so simple a thing as you might wish it to be; though a contract, it is freighted with cultural and traditional meanings that themselves informed the civil laws aspects of it. People are not ready for it; not yet. It’s not hatred or fear of homosexuals that informs this observation - it is rather the lack of any clear precedent for anything even remotely resembling the proposal in our legal or cultural history.

Take up the uganda thing with the ugandans, and spare us the pontification on it.
