Its a common theme in their circles that the origins of the Civil War had nothing to do slavery, rather that Lincoln only used slavery as an issue later on to rally waning support for the war. As their story goes, Lincoln was originally ambivalent about slavery and was only concerned only with preserving the Union. Allegedly, he would have even kept slavery intact to preserve the Union.
