The Ferengi were actually described in the show as “Yankee traders”. Apparently, the boys from New England drove some shrewd and tough bargains back before the Revolution. The “Triangular Trade” comes to mind.

Lots of tough-as-nails merchant cultures out there. But a lot of people were offended by the Ferengi, for a lot of reasons.
