In business, you negotiate because there’s something both sides have to gain. Sometimes those deals do fall through and it’s better to walk away, but as you say, politics is a different beast since these parties all have to continue working together and interacting.

Negotiating in politics is the same - everyone wants to gain something, and you need to understand what the sides want. Trump never bothered to figure out what that was. Neither did Ryan for that matter.

And it’s good that they didn’t.

Ryan might learn from this. Trump certainly wont.
