What makes you think he’s going to be a villain?

Even if it’s extremely sympathetic to Rather, maybe the movie will be sympathetic about how a guy with such a long career was in a hurry and got sloppy, that he was scammed by either a grifter or a Bush operative (depending who’s writing the script)…

The guy who catches the clues the protagonist didn’t… isn’t the villain. The villain is the guy who gave Rather the documents in the first place and lied about where they came from.
