Hearing it live, Mueller said what he said, and it was honest. I think he realized what happened as Lieu continued his questioning (and even later), and then tried to clarify because, for some reason, he is pathologically incapable of putting his thumb on the scale.

But here’s what kills me about it—if the situation was somehow reversed—if he made a first statement that condemned a Democrat and then tried to retract it—no one in the media would say boo. They’d role with the “I’d have convicted but for OLC policy”.
