Daniel Dennett, to the extent that he is a massive secularist, is on the ‘left’ in politics. His book, Darwin’s Dangerous Idea, is the most exciting thing I’ve ever read in my life. It’s goddamn brilliant.
Likewise, a lot of Orwell’s essays I find electrifying.
Sapolsky’s books on his research and its application to human behavior are amazingly fascinating and endlessly applicable, given that they’re about, you know, human behavior.
I think there’s a distinct different between pundits who cast themselves as intellectuals, and actual intellectuals who happen to have an interest in some aspect of politics.
