People won’t flock to see a sci-fi movie about a highly intelligent and peaceful civilization in space. They don’t want math and Plato. They want guns and sex while traveling around the universe.
Such civilizations are usually included in scifi as a contrast on “emotional” humans, as well as a means of tackling major scientific problems by simply having a character who’s smarter than the rest of the cast.
Generally, to show that “humans are the norm,” we find out that such species were once warlike in the past and only seem unemotional due to the fact that they have emotions far stronger but have to keep them under check.
