Well when used as an insult like this, “whore” doesn’t really mean the same thing as “prostitute,” and neither the speaker or listeners think he is making a factual statement that she engages in sex acts for money.

But “whore” wouldn’t be an insult unless it meant “prostitute.” I get what you’re saying, this is just one of those things that bothers me for reasons I cannot articulate well.

ETA: if it was just about promiscuity, they could go with “slut” but they don’t, they choose “whore” for a reason.
