Indeed. There were plenty of people back in those days whose religion taught that blacks and other non-whites were “lesser people,” and they used the Bible to back up their beliefs. Then that nasty secular law stepped in and said, nuh-huh, everybody’s equal.

They can believe whatever they frickin’ want, but the law is the law. Render unto Caesar, etc.
