In lawsuits like this, you’d bring all parties into the suit. You’d probably also bring in any subcontractors who might have done work on the plane, though as a defendant, the airline would bring a 3d party suit to bring the subs in. But that’s looking well ahead.

Boeing was brought in because they’re alleging a mechanical failure or perhaps design defect, even though there’s no evidence to indicate anything wrong with the plane at this time.

Getting the suit filed now can help avoid a statute of limitations issue down the road, but there’s little evidence to support any claims - for pretty much anything relating to the flight.

Oh, and bringing in a company like Boeing is all about seeking out the deep pockets should this eventually get settled or go to trial.

The Black Boxes, if and when found, may well address what actually happened.
