The Lanterman-Petris-Short Act was a liberal policy, and one that had the right intent. Blaming reagan for not ignoring the problems with public mental health facilities in the 50’s and 60’s seems a bit disingenuous. I think it’s weird to hear liberals say we should pick people up off the street and toss them in state mental hospitals against their will when they haven’t done anything wrong.

There are a lot of reasons why there are so many mentally ill people on the streets. The biggest is we’ve decided they actually have rights.
