He will never face a single legal consequence. America cannot tolerate a wealthy white man facing consequences at the best of times, but a former president? A former president who is the avatar of the worst part of America’s soul? To have him face a legal consequence of any kind would be a wound that this country simply could not survive.

In fact, I would go so far as to say that for Donald Trump to face a legal punishment would be the equivalent of the execution of Louis XVI. It would mean a seismic shift in the fabric of the United States as a whole, and effectively the birth of a new nation. He is the state. He is the living, breathing embodiment of the nation’s core principle, the privilege of wealthy white men. To negate that would be to negate America’s most sacred tradition.
