Notice: tracked the cause of that Apache crash we had earlier, and I’ve discovered another bottleneck: searching comments.
It’s another area that worked well enough (although not quickly) on the old servers, but makes the new servers very unhappy. I know exactly what needs to be changed — the pagination code uses MySQL’s ‘SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS’ clause, and it’s just too slow because of the size of the comments table.
Bottom line: that part of the search page is temporarily disabled.
Have you looked into sphinx?
