re: #389 Renaissance_Man

This line of reasoning has been around a lot lately, such as in that article about how Trump voters are blackballed on Tinder. ‘Just because I’m a Trump supporter doesn’t mean I’m not a nice guy’, and so on. Actually it does. By definition, the opinions you have and the stances you take make you not a decent person. Good people can and do occasionally do bad things, this is true. One lapse does not invalidate a lifetime of good acts. But if you continue to deliberately, stubbornly, hold opinions and take positions that clearly defend selfishness and evil, it is only reasonable to conclude that you are not a good person. You may be pleasant, you may be polite, but you are not good, or decent.

He’s your friend and I would never suggest that you take the opinions of people you’ve never met on the internet over a real life relationship. But I have had no trouble or hesitation cutting Trumpers out of my life, even ones I really liked.

True. Essentially in the end, I’m not ready to dissolve a friendship that goes back before I understood politics. It’d be almost like cutting off a sibling. But thanks for understanding my frustration and inner turmoil over this.
