It looks like Kird Dillard is going to win the GOP nod for Gov. What do you know about him?

Don’t be so sure. The latest numbers only put him about a thousand votes ahead of Brady, with McKenna fading fast. But he should hold on, as 96% of precincts are reporting.

He’s pretty well respected in political circles, and is probably the most moderate of all the candidates running in the primary. He actually cut an ad supporting Obama in 2008, which brought a lot of heat in the past few weeks. He probably did this to keep his seat, but he does have a lot of appeal from middle-of-the-road democrats.

We’ll see how things play out, but he is your standard fiscal conservative, social moderate. The Log Cabin Republicans endorsed him (no surprise) as well as most smaller newspapers and the Sun-Times. He’s a budget slasher, and wants to reduce the scope of mandated programs, especially in the school system.

I don’t know how you feel about former Gov. Edgar, but Dillard served as his chief of staff and got a glowing endorsement from Edgar.

As I said weeks ago, I always thought Dillard was the best candidate for the GOP. I’m just surprised that he is going to win.
