What if the engineer got sprayed with glass, instinctively reacts to it and is temporarily distracted? Also, can he have — for some reason — mistaken the acceleration and braking levers in that sort of scenario?

A thing to remember here is that a projectile does not have to penetrate a vehicle in order cause problems for the crew. Even if the projectile never makes it through the hull, armor, window, etc, the force of the impact can cause fragments of the part struck to spall off into the vehicle interior.

Normally, the stuff I learn about tanks and how to kill them doesn’t have non-military application. But today it does.
