When I see mounted police officers, they look impressive (especially effective for crowd control) but when I see bicycle cops, (effective for…handing out parking tickets?) they just look lame, especially in those tight little shorts and egg-shaped helmets.

Bike cops can be useful, especially in a city with a lot of bicycle riders. They can also respond faster than officers on foot and sometimes fit into gaps in traffic and between buildings that a squad car cannot. Sometime the biking gear can look silly, but they do their part. The bike cops in Chicago are through going professionals, I can say that for certain.
