No, its not senseless. It was intended to show the world that Al Qaeda was still a force to reckoned with, as well as to smack the US across the mouth. It was also intended to eliminate a highly competent and intrepid diplomat and terrify his colleagues.

The assault did accomplish most of its goals, all save the “terrify” part, since it will more like just make America and its diplomats angry. But the assault in Benghazi was not ‘senseless’. It had a number of purposes and achieved at least some of them.

Which goes back to, no matter how stupidly some moron acted, the use of the movie as an excuse was a cover story, one that plays well to show how they can rally “the faithful” with little effort to provide low risk canon fodder…much like the Taliban and AQ in Afghanistan knowing if women and children are present, the ROE don’t let the troops return fire…so they bring human shields to the fight…as did Saddam Hussein in the first Gulf War.
