I have no doubt that Belafon, as a veteran, fully gets this, but for those not having been in the military.

Males with heavy beards of thick, curly hair can often get ingrown hairs from closely shaving. This can cause infections, scarring, and other medical issues.

In the Army it was compounded in Combat Arms units which were often out in the field. Hygiene often can’t be as well maintained in the field.

Some of these folks are given waivers so they do not have to shave as closely or as often as other troops. Many of those with thick curly beards are African-American.

The sender of that text needs a BCD and a boot from the Air Farce.
