when i moved back to nyc from california, people asked me “how can you live in a place where you need to carry a gun when you go out at night?”.

when i moved back to california from nyc, people asked me “but what about the earthquakes?” “won’t you miss the seasons?” “don’t you miss trees when you live in a place like that?” (???) “but your mind will turn to mush living with all those happy go lucky lotus eaters practicing yoga and vegetarianism”

Mind will turn to mush? Does it ever occur to people just how many really well-off people live here? Where do they think all the money comes from?

WRT seasons and trees and such, my Dad couldn’t understand why I liked living out here, since it was so dry and brown every time he’d visited. Then he came out in Spring after a really rainy winter, and it was all as green as Ireland. He said, “Now I understand.”

Except, no, really, he didn’t. If you love California, it’s not just for the few months when it’s green.
