Actually and interestingly, one of the misconceptions many have is linking Taliban to the poppies. When they came to power in Afghanistan, they cut production by a lot - half or more. When the Taliban got kicked out, production began to increase (though not to pre-taliban levels).
I’ve argued in other places that fighting both drugs and the Taliban and thinking they’re the same is failing to know the enemy.
True.. HOWEVER
Despite the drop in opium cultivation, production and prices, the Taliban and other anti-government forces are making massive amounts of money from the drug business.
