We grow up in too sterile an environment.
Not that people 100 years ago all lived in filth, their houses were tidy but there were most often stalls and stables in or near their houses, and children were much more regularly exposed to dust, dirt and pollen from a very young age.
It the very lack of early exposure that prompts the body to react to every grain of dust or pollen as a potential threat.
I read somewhere that the surest way to avoid allergies is to grow up in a house that has pets, and little brothers.
