re: #399 lawhawk

CNN trying to gin up controversy over the phase-out of incandescent bulbs in 2014 (40 and 60w); 75 and 100w bulbs were phased out in 2013. The federal law was enacted in 2007, and designed to improve energy efficiency and would save people over the long term as they adopt the more efficient CFL or LED bulbs.

Home Depot notes that people have taken to buying the efficient bulbs, and put out a map showing who’s opting to buy the bulbs in greatest frequencies:

Home Depot has been selling 60/65 watt equivalent LEDs for around $7.50 (less if they’re on sale). I’ve started shifting to LEDs from CFLs or the incandescent bulbs in those fixtures that have dimmers. Already seeing a savings on my power bill. It’ll be a few years before I completely shifted to LED given that the CFLs are long-life bulbs too. But watching my power bill get cut by another 20-30% or more month after month? Yeah, that’s good stuff.

I probably won’t have to buy any CFLs or LEDs for a long time, thanks to the free CFLs I got from Duke Energy (they were shipping out boxes if you called for them).

I can use the 75W equiv in the lamps, can’t I, since they only put out 20W, even though they’re rated for 60W?
