re: #36 quickjustice

Who invented the fiction of “proportionate” response anyway? “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth”? That’s for civil society, not for the military.

The truth about “proportionate” responses:

“No one ever won a war by dying for his country. You win wars by making the other poor bastard die for his country.”

George S. Patton

It’s not a fiction. The point of war is to arrive at a better peace, at least from your own point of view. Now almost any peace would be better than a peace which includes daily rocket artillery barrages from Gaza. Still, the best peace would be one in which you didn’t have the blood of women and children on your hands. Those who die because they have been chained to Hamas firing positions or ammo depots, their blood is on Hamas’ hands. But those who starve? Best to not starve all Gaza just to make Hamas hungry. Hamas will be the last to suffer, and almost certainly international pressure will reach the point that Israel will have to relent, before all of the rest of the Palestinians, and then finally Hamas, are weak from hunger.
