It doesn’t make sense; maybe I’m just not seeing something.

I can only think of 2 things. One is they plan on bombing the pipelines and then blaming the Ukraine military for it as an excuse for rolling in or Putin has plans of leaving Crimea and he will cause as much disaster as he can on the way out.

Other than that I have no idea.
