Killgore, that’s a great post. (Food issues are near and dear to me.) May I recommend two of Michael Pollan’s books? Both The Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food are worthwhile. While I’m not in 100% agreement with all of Mr Pollan’s ideas, he’s a non-veggie with a decent perspective on the sources of our food and the overall state of the food production industry. He has a clear preference for small, local and independent producers vs. Big Ag, which may be a useful caveat. IMNSHO, he’s a worthwhile voice.

I’d second that. Pollan and I also disagree on a few points, but he is very clear about his own biases and makes sure the reader is aware of them.
