I was expecting a Russian Fifth Column to be in place to disrupt Ukrainian communications, command network, the energy grid and key transportation hubs, making it impossible for them to mounted a concerted or coordinated defense, and leaving the Russian forces to simply move in and occupy their objectives.

I do not know if that failed or if it was ever planned in the first place.

My understanding is that Putin gave the FSB the equivalent of $5 billion to go and put a fifth column together in Ukraine like you thought. It would seem, surprise surprise, that this money ended up in a lot of pockets, probably mostly Russian ones, and whichever Ukrainians they bought off didn’t stay bought. It’s hard finding good help these days.
