I think that for some parents, the best thing they can do for their kids is say,
“I’m sorry I’m a hypocritical scumbag. I have no moral character at all, and I’m probably lying if I ever claim I’ve changed. Never lend me any money or take my advice. And remember: You are not me. My flaws are my own, not yours, and you don’t inherit them. I’m sorry I failed you.”
And then get the fuck out of their lives. Because they’ll never change.
I agree except for that last part. If he were acknowledging his lack of moral character, but still loved his kids, they can see him sometimes, and still love him. I would hope they’d have some better role model in their lives, maybe grandfathers or uncles, or a decent stepfather, but it’s ok to love a flawed Dad.
