This was not a fertilizer bomb.

Lets not assume that fertilizer bombs are unsophisticated. Nearly all explosives contain high levels of nitrogen. The reason for this is that the N2 molecule that is created when nitrogen combusts is extremely chemical stable. In fact the the energy of formation (delta-h) for N2 is nearly 1000 kilojoules which is the highest of all gases. Fertilizers are very high in nitrogen.
