re: #419 goddamnedfrank

I oppose the death penalty, but Norway also lacks life without parole and I can’t imagine ever letting this guy out. Their criminal justice system just isn’t equipped to confront evil on this scale. Hopefully they’ll find a mental health or public safety basis upon which to keep him imprisoned forever.

They have mechanisms capable of effecting a life imprisonment, but they don’t do it all in one sentence. I believe the maximum sentence at trial is 21 years, but it can be reviewed upon completion of the 21 years, and at that point the gov’t can opt to tack on an extra 5 years. Every subsequent 5 years gets another review, and each time they can opt to detain the prisoner another 5 years.

So, they don’t have life sentences, but they can keep prisoners in prison for life. (I may be mistaken about this, but this is my understanding)
