No expert on RCC lines-of-authority, but isn’t (formal, legal) “excommunication” above the pay-grade of your average bishop?
I mean, they can (and usually do) bitch away endlessly about abortion, but isn’t the power to actually toss someone out of the Church reserved to the Pope? Or some other body well up the Vatican chain-of-command??
