It has not happened much to me, but when folks start talking about the āEnd of Daysā and āThe Raptureā to me; I have an urge to go āOh My gosh! You donāt know?ā followed by āIām so sorry!ā
By the way, the United States has had quite a relationship with the concept of the āEnd of Timesā.
For example, William Miller announced that Christās return would occur October 22, 1844. When it didnāt, it became āThe Great Disappointmentā.
There were groups who claimed a misinterpretation of the date with forecasts for 1874, 1914, and 1925, among other dates. From Millerās disappointed followers originated a group called āZionās Watch Tower Tract Societyā. It is known today as āThe Jehovahās Witnessesā.
Another bit of Americana āWhen the Saints Go Marching Inā is an African-American rendition of the Apocalypse.
My grandfather, a Missouri farmer used to talk about āThe old āMossback Farmersā waiting for the āEnd of Timesā on their front porch next to their casketsā.
And, of course, the lyrics of the Hallelujah Chorus in Handelās Messiah come from Revelations 11 and 19.
