It has not happened much to me, but when folks start talking about the ā€œEnd of Daysā€ and ā€œThe Raptureā€ to me; I have an urge to go ā€œOh My gosh! You donā€™t know?ā€ followed by ā€œIā€™m so sorry!ā€

By the way, the United States has had quite a relationship with the concept of the ā€œEnd of Timesā€.

For example, William Miller announced that Christā€™s return would occur October 22, 1844. When it didnā€™t, it became ā€œThe Great Disappointmentā€.

There were groups who claimed a misinterpretation of the date with forecasts for 1874, 1914, and 1925, among other dates. From Millerā€™s disappointed followers originated a group called ā€œZionā€™s Watch Tower Tract Societyā€. It is known today as ā€œThe Jehovahā€™s Witnessesā€.

Another bit of Americana ā€œWhen the Saints Go Marching Inā€ is an African-American rendition of the Apocalypse.

My grandfather, a Missouri farmer used to talk about ā€œThe old ā€˜Mossback Farmersā€™ waiting for the ā€˜End of Timesā€™ on their front porch next to their casketsā€.

And, of course, the lyrics of the Hallelujah Chorus in Handelā€™s Messiah come from Revelations 11 and 19.
