I believe it’s the other way around. I recently read a good article on why belief in a meritocracy is bad for us, but basically it’s a wholly self-congratulatory belief system. As in, I am rich, therefore I must be better than everyone who is not as rich.
In part it’s because a capitalist meritocracy keeps score by wealth. Though I’d argue that a non-meritocracy system would arguably be worse since it’d probably fall back on an aristocracy or caste system given human preference for arbitrary tribal distinctions and I guess a need to feel superior to someone else by default.
