It wasn’t an issue at the time. On one side we had a trashed economy and disastrous foreign policy. No one was going to insist on a completely secular and religiously sterile President. Iran Hostage crisis vs a belief in creationism? Gee… we’d sure like to get rid of Carter but that other guy is a religious kook!
