“conservatism” will always be destructive of traditional american values because it cannot abide the moral imperatives of church and community. instead, it strives, despite experience and the sum of human practical and moral history, to declare every individual totally independent of every other in a universe of autonomous consumer units, and, indeed, to inculcate selfishness as a supreme value that, they declare, is the engine that will lead to the greater good

why a “conservative” would care anything about the greater good is not clear. conservatism is too incoherent to address, or even care about, this insoluble paradox
