As in some other Southern states, a key aspect is how the Union won. Other than the (admittedly critical) capture of Vicksburg, Grant and Sherman didn’t target Confederate forces in Mississippi so much as they deliberately set out to destroy the state’s ability to support said forces. It was ugly, impoverishing, and deeply humiliating to the white population of the state and they have not forgotten it.

Scorched Earth tactics won the war in Mississippi, but winning the peace required a longer-term and more-costly (both in money and blood) effort than the North was ultimately willing to make.

Yeah, I really feel sorry for folks that held towns for ransom, under the threat of burning them to the ground, when they invaded Maryland and kidnapped free blacks from Maryland and Pennsylvania and sold them into slavery in the South.

Yep, this is my sad face, you betcha.
