Honestly, I don’t think that would assuage the older Evangelicals one bit. Their difference is the most basic one; they think that the founder of his religion was a false prophet. There’s not a lot of wiggle room to explain LDS without confirming that, yes, indeed, they view Joseph Smith as a prophet.

Then he needs to just bite the bullet and admit it. If they want to be asshole idiots there’s no way to stop them. But Romney needs to redouble his organizational efforts and work to marginalize some of the most hostile voices. A way to minimize defections is to attack the potential defection leaders and dirty them up. Reduce their respectability and you’ll keep the number of followers lower.
