Problem is that the political reality has to give way to the economic reality, which is that Cheeto Benito is murder to their bottom line. Jamming the country into another recession in a presidential election year where the Senate map favors the DNC and the guy at the top of the ticket makes Nixon look like a piker? The midterms just proved that a big enough turnout can and will overcome their gerrymander firewall, so they can’t even really rely upon that going into 2020.

In my experience most GOP donors don’t actually have that good a sense of their own economic self interest. Like most people they have an ideology, and the assumptions underpinning that ideology all too often do not comport themselves with reality, and when that happens these people tend to towards reevaluating their concept of reality instead of reexamining the assumptions behind the original hypothesis.

All that to say I don’t expect the Koch’s, Mercer’s, etc to change their tune any time soon.
