It always needs to be delivered with the careful flair that the people who you making a joke for understand you are really on your side. If the people who you are mocking think you support them that is awesome, but it has to be secondary.

Stephen Colbert was a master, but that’s because those on the left never asked ourselves if he was being serious.

I couldn’t watch Colbert. I worked with people who said things just like Colbert did… and were totally serious about it.
