Raising the retirement age— the government-mandated retirement age— is certainly a part of a command economy. The specific age is arbitrary; having a government-mandated retirement age is certainly a position of the ‘left’.

No, I think he’s looking for solutions and found he had to go against the left on that issue. But he’s going to have to run for re-election from the right (after ramming through a raise of the retirement age, the left in France hates him), so look for him to make further moves in that direction. My concern is that he might go from “conservative” to “far-right” and give credence to the nativist and “counter-jihad” crowd.
