Gah. I always thought that was stupid. Having an opportunity to pay down the national debt, and thus reduce the amount of money in the budget spent on paying debt interest was such an obvious thing to do.

The debt is essentially kicking things down the road. When you have a chance to do some catching up, do so.

That the cuts should have been rescinded once the economy went sour (and the source of the surplus went away) is obvious as well. But then again, that’s assuming those in power have the interests of the country in mind as a priority over party and maintaining their seat. :p

I agree. In hindsight they were clearly not a very good idea. Anyways, they were intended to be temporary.
