I keep trying IPAs, and somehow they hit my palate wrong more often than not. It’s not the bitter, it’s the resinous quality.

You’re not wrong and don’t feel like you don’t “get it.” Many American IPAs are like punk rock, meant as an poseur test. Some are really good, but most are overwhelming and stupidly unbalanced.

Bitter or even resinous is not bad per se - though not for everyone - but overdone it literally numbs the tongue. Perhaps try IPAs (or PAs) that use more pleasant hops like Citra or Galaxy. Zombie Dust or A Little Crazy are good examples.

Or better, stick the balanced, complex, perfect Belgian beers.
