Maybe I can’t look at this objectively. I grew up in the South, and had to listen to all manner of vile racist invective sandwiched in between the idiotic fantasies of “the South will rise again.”

So when an old conservative southerner writes a “history” of the Civil War where “South wins! South wins!” (even if just a big battle) I’m VERY skeptical of his motives, of what thought process led him to even conceive of such a thing.

A lot of historians have written about how Lee could have won the Gettysburg campaign. Newt was exploring that. I also think he wanted to write an alternative history of the Civil War were the draconian methods used to finally defeat the south are not needed.
