Good idea about US made pipe. But I doubt there is any mill in the US now that could make the pipe needed. Was not the pipe used in building the Alaska pipe line made in the Orient?

Then build out the facilities at an existing mill. The president should just make it public: “I’ll let this pipeline be built, but only if we use US pipe [though I permit some percentage of the steel products to be sourced from Canada]. I’m requiring this so that quality control can be assured and that in the event of a spill caused by faulty steel, the accountable parties will not be able to evade responsibility.”

This a case where I’ll actually support Barack Obama leveling a mandate.
