That winger lie has been around basically since it happened. The deal to release the hostages was completed during Carter’s last days in office and under his administration. The Iranians delayed the actual release until a few minutes after Reagan had been sworn in, in a crude effort to humiliate Carter and keep him from taking credit for the release. Reagan himself recognized this and countered the Iranian ploy by appointing Carter to go to Algeria and meet the freed hostages as his personal representative. Wingnut liars like Cruz are letting themselves be manipulated by the Iranians.

Not to mention that Carter actually had the military attempt a rescue attempt, disastrous as it was. I don’t recall Reagan doing jackshit for any of the hostages Hezbollah or Islamic Jihad were torturing to death.
