They want to be ruled by a strong authoritarian leader while at the same time wishing to rule over others they view as “less worthy” in the same fashion.

Right, and also Putin projects things in a black and white way that Obama would never. To the right, the world is full of good guys and bad guys rather than the good guys capable of bad things or bad guys capable of good things complexity.
