There has to be places to cut spending other than education. Education is something the nation ultimately benefits from anyway so it doesn’t make sense to me.

Clinton’s welfare reform put people back to work. It offered a 2 year program to learn a degree, a skill and then you’re on your own. Employers that hire these people get tax breaks. For those who can do it, it’s a win win. My point is, welfare isn’t throwing money into a gaping hole if used wisely. But there are those who just want to cut it.

Educating those on welfare and giving them a leg-up in the job market, alongside tax breaks to businesses who hire them, is a worthwhile endeavor. I heard a friend suggest the other day that that’s what should be done with unemployment, namely after 6 months, if the person has not succeeded in finding new employment, switch from simply providing “insurance” to paying to retrain them for a new field.

At the same time, you can only cut so much elsewhere before you start goring somebody else’s ox.
