IOW, they WERE Jews (& the ones in the full maternal line STILL ARE), & are returning to Jewish practice.
There were plenty of rabbis, however, who were worried - not in the least unnaturally - that the maternal line was not unbroken, & that their practices were not genuine Judaism. Even the most hardline of rabbis were willing to waive their reservations if they underwent the same mikveh that any Jew who commits apostasy undergoes. But some of them refused - hence the worry.
Which is not to say that it should ever have been solved this way - this is horrendous. Despicable. But I can see that the situation isn’t bad enough for someone who openly hates Israeli Jews, so you had to lie about it.
