The thing is, our government is also part of our culture, and always has been. A lot of our cultural icons are speeches made by politicians, bills signed, etc. Bills very often have a moral weight to them. And a lot of people seem to feel that all it should be is some robotic neutral broker, taking no position of its own. I think it’s fine for the government to take the position that science is good— hell, it’s written into the constitution that promoting the arts and sciences is one of the duties of the government. You can’t promote science if you pretend that non-scientific things are science.
